Legal, Ethical, and Human Rights Issues in Mental Health

At the Mental Health World Conference (MHWC 2026), this session examines the intersections of mental health systems with the legal framework. Topics include involuntary treatment, mental health legislation, the rights of psychiatric patients, and ethical dilemmas encountered in clinical practice.

The conference will further highlight variations in global legislation regarding mental health issues, including capacity assessment, consent, confidentiality, and guardianship. In addition, attention will be drawn to the application of human rights-based strategies in offering healthcare services and safeguarding vulnerable patients from discrimination and coercion. The necessity of global recommendations for fostering the ethical conduct of healthcare organizations in meeting public health demands will be considered.

Finally, the conference will consider several ethical decision-making cases, including the administration of treatment to patients with terminal illnesses and the denial of medical help. Case studies will be analyzed to assist healthcare professionals in complying with the legislation and upholding human rights.
