  • Title: A Neuroscience Informed, Trauma Sensitive, and Systems Based Approach to ADHD, Autism, and Learning Differences

Abstract

Neurodevelopmental disorders such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Specific Learning Disorders are rising in global prevalence, yet the systems designed to support affected individuals often remain fragmented, reductionist, and symptom focused. While diagnostic clarity has improved, many individuals continue to experience mislabeling, delayed intervention, stigma, and culturally insensitive care particularly in rapidly changing multicultural societies. This presentation proposes a neuroscience informed and trauma sensitive framework for understanding ADHD, autism, and learning differences beyond pathology. Drawing from clinical practice, neurofeedback based brain training, and integrative psychotherapy models, this talk explores how executive dysfunction, emotional dysregulation, sensory processing challenges, and rejection sensitivity are not merely behavioral issues but manifestations of nervous system dysregulation shaped by both neurobiology and environment. Emerging evidence in neuroplasticity, polyvagal theory, and brain mapping (QEEG) suggests that neurodevelopmental presentations often coexist with chronic stress patterns, attachment disruptions, and unprocessed trauma. In many cases, children and adults diagnosed with ADHD or ASD are not only managing cognitive differences but also navigating shame based identities, social rejection, and systemic misunderstanding.
This session will explore:
• The intersection between neurodevelopmental conditions and trauma
• Executive function impairments and their impact on emotional regulation
• The role of sensory processing in behavioral expression
• Cultural influences in diagnosis and treatment access
• Brain based interventions such as neurofeedback as a complementary approach to traditional therapy
Special attention will be given to the importance of early intervention, parent psychoeducation, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Families frequently experience confusion when navigating medical, educational, and psychological systems. By integrating neuroscience with compassionate inquiry and culturally sensitive frameworks, practitioners can shift from a deficit based lens to a strengths-oriented model that emphasizes regulation, resilience, and relational repair.
